At Great Dalby Primary School, we endeavour to make our curriculum broad and balanced, creative, inspiring and as thought provoking as possible. Our curriculum is based upon the DfE National Curriculum 2014, which sets out what the school is required to teach. We use a range of ‘vehicles’ to deliver our curriculum, however our main driver is Cornerstones. Please see individual curriculum pages to gain an insight into how we provide a bespoke programme for children at Great Dalby Primary School by working with other programmes and resources including; Talk for Writing, White Rose Maths, Discovery RE and the Leicestershire Schools Music Service, amongst other vehicles.
The Cornerstones Curriculum
The Cornerstones Curriculum is a creative and thematic approach to learning that is mapped to the 2014 Primary National Curriculum to ensure comprehensive coverage of national expectations. The curriculum will be delivered through Imaginative Learning Projects (ILPs) which aim to provide a rich menu of exciting and motivating learning activities that make creative links between all aspects of our children’s learning. Children will progress through 4 stages of learning in each ILP: Engage, Develop, Innovate, Express.
We believe children learn better when they are encouraged to use their imagination and apply their learning to engaging contexts. This means, our curriculum will provide lots of learning challenges throughout the academic year that will require children to solve problems, apply themselves creatively and express their knowledge and understanding effectively across the curriculum.
Cornerstones also provides a rigorous essentials skills framework that outlines the end of year expectations in all subjects. These essential skills are tied to activities and are age related so that staff can track children’s progress and identify their individual learning needs. We have developed a programme that ensures curriculum coverage within our mixed age classes.
